The IEEE DySPAN 2024 conference is pleased to announce the availability of the following types of student travel grants:
A. Travel grants sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc).
B. Travel grants sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation.
The selected student recipients will receive up to $1,500.00 for covering or offsetting their travel expenses to attend DySPAN. The students will be able to use their travel grant awards for different travel expenses, e.g., ground or air transportation, conference registration fees, lodging, and meals. The final acceptance and award value will be determined solely by the Student Travel Grant Committee. Student recipients will be reimbursed after the conference (detailed instructions will be provided to students supported by this type of STG).
Eligibility Criteria:
Following the application guidelines below, a student may apply to one or more categories if they are eligible. The eligibility criteria for each category are:
A. Travel grants sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc). To qualify, a student must
(i) be a valid Student Member of the IEEE ComSoc at the time of application;
(ii) be a full-time student registered toward a Bachelor, Masters, or Ph.D. degree in engineering or related field in a college or university when submitting the application;
(iii) be an author who will present an accepted paper at DySPAN;
(iv) applicant may not receive more than one IEEE ComSoc Student Travel Grant (STG) in any 12-month period.
B. Travel grants sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (approval pending). To qualify, a student must be a full-time student at a U.S. institution and a first-time attendee of DySPAN. Priorities will be given to those from underrepresented minorities in higher education, e.g., women, LatinX, African Americans, and Native Americans, as well as students from disadvantaged backgrounds, OR who have papers posters, papers, demos, or workshops accepted by DySPAN 2024 but have no Federal research grants to support their travel.
The preference will be given to students who have registered for the main conference by the registration deadline, but no pre-registration is required. All recipients of the STGs are required to register for the main conference, either at a Full Registration rate or a Student Registration rate. The final award is contingent upon the recipient showing proof of registration, attending every day of the main conference track, and submitting a written report about their experience during the conference (detailed instructions will be provided for reimbursement).
Application Procedure:
An application for a student travel grant will consist of the following documents, and incomplete applications will not be considered:
- A request letter from the student applicant (detailed below).
- A recommendation letter from the student's advisor (also detailed below).
- The student's Curriculum Vitae (CV).
- An estimate of the following costs that the student will have for attending DySPAN: ground or air transportation, hotel, and conference registration.
The first step in the application is for the student to provide contact details of their supervisor, who EDAS will contact to submit a recommendation letter for the student containing the following information:
- Confirmation that the applicant is a bona fide full-time graduate or undergraduate student in good academic standing at the given institution.
- The suitability of the IEEE DySPAN 2024 program material to the student's research area.
- Ways this particular student would benefit from attendance at the conference.
- The strengths and potential contributions of the student.
- The advisor's commitment to covering the student's travel cost in excess of the travel grant award.
After the student advisor submits their recommendation letter, the student can return to EDAS to complete their application and provide the remaining documents. The request letter from the student should be at most two pages long and include the following information:
- The type(s) of STG (A and/or B) that the student is applying for.
- Confirmation that the student is a first-time DySPAN attendee and information on whether the student will present any accepted posters, papers, demos, or workshops at the conference.
- Confirmation that the student is not supported by any Federal grants, as students supported by Federal grants are expected to use their grant funds for traveling to the conference.
- A brief summary of research interests and accomplishments to date. Students should demonstrate a serious interest in wireless communications and/or networking throughcoursework and projects.
- A description of areas reflected in the DySPAN 2024 program that would impact the student'sresearch.
- A statement about why conference attendance is important to the student.
- (Optional) Demographic information and a voluntary participation statement explaining the importance of broadening participation in computing for their self-identified under-represented groups.
- Information on whether and when the student has received NSF or IEEE ComSoc travel grants before.
IMPORTANT: For recipients of the NSF STG, all flights must be purchased either from a U.S.-based carrier or ticketed through a U.S. carrier, e.g., codeshare flights on international airlines, in accordance with the Fly America Act.
Applicants should create their application as a single PDF file, following the format described above. After logging in to EDAS, click on the “Travel Grants" Tab, search for a conference called "DySPAN 2024 ComSoc Student Travel Grant” or "DySPAN 2024 NSF Student Travel Grant”. If you apply for type A (by IEEE ComSoc) only, or apply for both type A and type B (by U.S. NSF), please submit your application at "DySPAN 2024 IEEE ComSoc Student Travel Grant”. If you apply for type B only, please submit your application "DySPAN 2024 NSF Student Travel Grant”.

FAQs:
1. Should I combine my advisor's recommendation letter with my application together to submit to EDAS for different types of grants?
Ans: No. You will need to provide the email address of your advisor when you submit the application. Your advisor will then receive a separate email from EDAS to instruct them to submit the recommendation letter to EDAS.
2. Am I eligible to apply for the student travel grant without being the author of a poster, paper, demo, or workshop?
Ans: You are welcome to apply, but please be mindful that your application will be given lower priority than other applications.
